Village of Lyons Set to Hold Blood Drive Tuesday Jan. 29

Village of Lyons Set to Hold Blood Drive Tuesday

The Village of Lyons will be teaming with Heartland Blood Centers in hosting a blood drive Tuesday January, 29th.

The blood drive will be held in the north parking lot of the Lyons Village Hall from 2:30 pm until 6:30 pm.

Lyons Parks and Recreation will be running the event with Heartland Blood Centers, who will have a mobile coach parked in the lot.

Lyons Mayor Christopher Getty feels strongly about the positive advantages to Blood Donation.

There are so many benefits in donating blood and am planning to attend the drive on Tuesday, said Mayor Getty.

“We are honored to be able to host a blood drive and know Lyons residents and residents from the surrounding areas will come out and donate,” said Mayor Getty.  “Blood donation is crucial as so many people benefit from it.”

According to the American Red Cross, more than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day and the average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.

Lyons hosted a blood drive last October with Heartland Blood Centers and saw record a record number in blood donation.
Mayor Getty is hoping to beat this record.

The Lyons Village hall is located at 4200 Lawndale Avenue Lyons, IL 60534. Must be 16 or older to donate and have a photo ID.

Celebratory Poster and Banners Created to Honor 125 Years

Mayor Christopher Getty commissioned a limited edition poster in honor of the village’s 125th year as a municipal government.  Featuring the Hofmann Tower in its design, 1,000 copies of the poster were produced and the first 100 were signed personally by Mayor Getty.

At a senior meeting January 17,th  Mayor Getty expressed his excitement about the milestone as he handed out the posters to those in attendance.

“I am proud of this Village and it brings me great joy to be able to honor Lyons and those that who have been a part of its making, both past and present,” said Mayor Getty.

Mayor Getty also implemented a decorative banner program featuring the same design as the poster with the addition of space for businesses to advertise.

These banners will be hung on light poles along Ogden, Harlem, Lawndale and Joliet Avenues.

The decorative banners will come at no cost to Lyons.

"We have many events planned this year and we plan to incorporate the 125 year theme with all of our events." said Mayor Getty.

The first planned event will be the State of the Village on Wednesday, March 20th.  Mayor Getty will lead in a ceremony and give his annual State of the Village Speech followed by a reception at the Lyons Village Hall.

Residents can receive a free poster at the Village Hall.

Lyons Board makes Christie a One Way

Lyons Board makes Christie a One Way

The Lyons Village Board approved turning Christie Avenue into a west bound one way street.

Trustee Paul Marchiori, who resides on Christie,  along with his neighbors have long desired one direction of traffic on the narrow street. Trustee Marchiori brought this to Mayor Getty’s Attention and the two of them petitioned the one way option to the residents on Christie.

Residents on the block supported the measure overwhelmingly with all the homes supporting it on the block but one.

Marchiori said he was concerned for the safety of everyone on the block.

“Our street is just too narrow to have two directions of traffic,” said Marchiori. “I appreciate the support I received from the Mayor and the other board members.”

The board also approved 42nd Street to the North of Christie Avenue to be a through street. The board hopes this will make 42nd Street more accessible for Police leaving Village Hall and Smith Park more accessible to residents.

Lyons continues to see business growth

Lyons continues to see business growth

The Village of Lyons reported an increase in new business over the past three years and plans to welcome another business, Twilight Party Rentals from Brookfield to Lyons.

Since 2009, Lyons has seen more than 25 businesses open in the local area.

“I am always willing to help businesses find ways to move to our community, said Mayor Getty. “When you have a strong base of businesses, you ease the tax burden on the residents.”

Lyons has also seen an increase in businesses relocating to Lyons from other surrounding municipalities. Twilight Party Rentals from Brookfield is one of those businesses.

Opened for 10 years, Twilight Party Rentals is a full service party rental company, providing tables and chairs, tents, moon jumps, photo booths, outdoor heaters, DJs and more.  Owner Jerry Jones believes his company has outgrown his Brookfield location and is planning to relocate to Lyons.

“When I started Twilight ten years ago, I wanted to be a one-stop-shop for people and was running my business out of my garage,” said Twilight Party Rentals Owner Jerry Jones.  “Over the years, we have grown exponentially; and most recently, we have started to supply equipment for large scale municipal events.”

Jones said due to his growth, Twilight Party Rentals is in desperate need of a larger building and thinks Lyons can provide this.

“I am looking to move to Lyons, they are very pro-business,” said Jones.

Jones said Mayor Getty has been very accommodating and welcoming, taking time out of his busy schedule to speak and meet with him.

Mayor Getty and Jones met early in January of this year to review different areas of Lyons and to explore possible locations for Twilight.

“If a business owner or individual is interested in relocating their business, we do whatever we can to assist in getting them into our community and welcome them with open arms”, said Mayor Getty.

The economy is still down, so we have to work tirelessly in bringing businesses to Lyons and our hard work is paying off, said Mayor Getty.

Since Christopher Getty has been Mayor, Lyons has seen the addition of: Pop’s Italian Beef & Sausage Restaurant, D. Thai Restaurant, Maktrans Trucking, Kemp’s Milk Distributors, Teamsters Local 777 Union, Athlete Within Basketball School, Chicago Registry Restaurant Supplier, WingStop Restaurant, Superior Cartage Trucking, Falafelji Restaurant, Foundations Performance Dance Center, Picos Tacos Restaurant, T-Mobile Phone Store, Oxford Insurance Agency, Farmers Insurance Agency, Superior Ambulance Service, Kopicki’s Funeral Home, Certified Electronics Repair, Madly Pop’n Popcorn Supply, and more.

Mayor Getty Welcomes New Thai Restaurant to Lyons

Mayor Christopher Getty welcomed a new Thai restaurant to Lyons last week called D. Thai. Located at 7221 Ogden Avenue, D. Thai is a family-owned and operated eatery providing traditional Thai food ranging from spicy curry to mango sticky rice.
